Tell us something interesting about yourself that most people don’t know.
I have always enjoyed staying active, and despite my busy career, I can still do a handstand, a cartwheel, and even some breakdance moves. Movement and fitness have always been a big part of my life.
What is your 'why?' What inspires you every day to do more and be better?
I am inspired every day by the ability to help people heal and improve their quality of life. Being an orthopedic surgeon allows me to restore function, relieve pain, and help injured workers return to their jobs and daily lives. It is a privilege to make such an impact on my patients' well-being.
If you were to describe yourself in three words, what would they be and why?Dedicated, empathetic, and personable. I am dedicated to providing the best care possible, empathetic towards my patients' concerns and struggles, and personable because I value strong relationships with my patients, colleagues, and staff.
Take us back to when you first began practicing medicine. What was it like for you?
After years of rigorous training, I was excited to finally put my knowledge and skills into practice. The transition from residency and fellowship to practicing independently was rewarding, as I could now make real decisions that directly impacted my patients' lives. It was the start of an incredibly fulfilling journey.
What do you like most about practicing medicine and why?
The relationships I build with my patients and their families. Many of my patients initially see me under a workers' compensation claim, but they often return later for other orthopedic concerns because they trust my care. These long-term connections are what make my work so fulfilling.
What is your philosophy when treating injured workers?
I treat injured workers with the same level of care and respect as I do any other patient. I take the time to understand their specific circumstances, explain their treatment plan and work restrictions, and ensure they feel heard. I also clarify that while I play a key role in their recovery, I am not responsible for their employment status or payroll concerns. When patients feel that I genuinely care, they are more motivated to recover.
What changes or improvements do you feel you can bring to the workers' compensation industry?
One of the biggest improvements that can be made in the industry is reducing delays in specialist care. When injured workers see a specialist like me for hand, wrist, or elbow injuries early in their treatment process, they tend to recover faster and return to work sooner. Delays in care can lead to frustration and prolonged disability, which is why quick access to the right provider is crucial.
What is your process for evaluating and treating patients?
I review all available medical records before seeing a patient so that our discussion can focus on their current condition rather than revisiting their entire history. I aim to provide a clear diagnosis as soon as possible, as appropriate treatment always starts with an accurate understanding of the injury. If I have any uncertainties or concerns about secondary gain issues, I immediately order the necessary tests to ensure we are addressing the correct problem.
How do you find balance between your work and home life?
I prioritize my family while maintaining my professional responsibilities. I ensure that I am present for family dinners, homework help, and my children’s activities. I also limit unnecessary professional commitments, such as excessive committee work and evening events, to create time for what matters most outside of work.
What has been your biggest professional accomplishment to date?
Developing a strong reputation in the community as a trusted orthopedic upper extremity specialist. While awards and media recognition are nice, my greatest achievement is when patients return to me for care because they trust my expertise and know that I helped them or a family member in the past.
What is the vision, mission, and culture of your practice?
At the Orthopaedic Center of South Florida, we have been providing high-quality orthopedic care for over 25 years. Our team consists of orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, and pain management specialists, allowing us to offer comprehensive care. We take pride in our stability, having very little turnover among physicians, and in our commitment to serving our community in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.
What makes your practice unique?
I strive to be highly accessible and accommodating for patients who need to be seen quickly. Additionally, I offer minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided trigger finger release procedures in-office, which can be performed in about 10-15 minutes without the need for sutures.
What strategies do you use to ensure clear communication with all involved parties?
I complete the DWC-25 form immediately after each workers' compensation visit so that patients and adjusters receive work restrictions without delay. I also proactively follow up with adjusters and case managers if ordered tests or treatments have not been approved, ensuring the patient’s care moves forward efficiently. Effective communication leads to better outcomes and smoother coordination between all parties involved.
What final thoughts would you share with those in workers' compensation?Workers' compensation patients often get an unfair reputation. In my experience, most injured workers genuinely want to recover and return to work. When the adjuster, case manager, and physician work together effectively, we can achieve the best possible outcomes for the patient and the employer.
