In our last edition of BLOOM Magazine, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Jose Ortega, a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with The Center for Bone & Joint Surgery. As a WorkCompReady™ doctor on the OM Panel, Dr. Ortega is dedicated to helping injured workers recover efficiently and return to their jobs as safely as possible.
We talked about his journey into orthopedics, the role of regenerative medicine in treatment, and how he approaches workers' compensation cases to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
Here’s our conversation:
Bloom Magazine: Dr. Ortega, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Can you start by telling us a bit about your background and what led you to specialize in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine?
Dr. Ortega: Thank you, it's my pleasure. My journey into orthopedic surgery and sports medicine began during my medical training at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. I was always fascinated by the mechanics of the human body and how we can repair and improve its function, especially in athletes and active individuals. My fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation further solidified my interest, where I specialized in arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee.
Bloom Magazine: That sounds like an impressive background. Could you tell us more about your areas of expertise and the types of procedures you commonly perform?
Dr. Ortega: Certainly. My areas of expertise include arthroscopic rotator cuff and instability repairs, knee ligament reconstruction, and management of meniscal and cartilage injuries. I also focus on non-invasive treatment options for shoulder and knee arthritis. Additionally, I utilize regenerative medicine technology for treating arthritis and soft tissue injuries, which has been a significant advancement in providing effective care for my patients.
Bloom Magazine: Regenerative medicine sounds fascinating. How do you incorporate it into your practice, and what benefits have you seen for your patients?
Dr. Ortega: Regenerative medicine involves using the body’s own healing mechanisms to repair damaged tissues. In my practice, I use techniques such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy to enhance the body’s natural healing processes. These treatments have shown excellent results in reducing pain, improving function, and often delaying the need for more invasive procedures like surgery.
Bloom Magazine: As someone deeply involved in orthopedic research, can you share some insights into your recent work and how it contributes to improving patient care?
Dr. Ortega: My research focuses on improving surgical techniques and outcomes for patients undergoing shoulder and knee repairs. I’ve presented numerous lectures at national and international conferences, sharing my findings on advanced arthroscopic procedures and regenerative medicine. This continuous exchange of knowledge helps us refine our techniques and adopt the latest, evidence-based practices to ensure the highest quality of care.
Bloom Magazine: How do you approach treating injured workers, and what are your priorities when managing their care?
Dr. Ortega: Treating injured workers requires a comprehensive and tailored approach. My priorities are to accurately diagnose the injury, provide effective treatment options, and develop a personalized rehabilitation plan. I emphasize clear communication with the patient and their employer to ensure everyone understands the recovery process and expected outcomes. The goal is to help the injured worker return to their job as quickly and safely as possible, minimizing downtime and promoting a full recovery.
Bloom Magazine: What role does patient education play in your practice, particularly for workers' compensation cases?
Dr. Ortega: Patient education is crucial, especially in workers' compensation cases. I strive to help my patients fully understand their condition, the treatment options available, and the expected outcomes. This knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions about their care and promotes adherence to the treatment plan. Educated patients are more likely to engage in their recovery process, which can lead to better outcomes and a quicker return to work.
Bloom Magazine: How do you stay current with the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine?
Dr. Ortega: Staying current with the latest advancements is essential for providing the highest quality of care. I regularly attend national and international conferences, participate in continuing medical education courses, and collaborate with colleagues in research projects. Additionally, I am a member of several professional organizations, such as the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, which provide access to the latest research and best practices in the field.
Bloom Magazine: It’s clear that you’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for your patients. What do you believe sets your practice apart from others in the field?
Dr. Ortega: I believe it’s a combination of advanced surgical techniques, commitment to ongoing research, and a personalized approach to patient care. Being bilingual and fully fluent in both English and Spanish also allows me to connect with a broader range of patients and ensure they fully understand their treatment options. My goal is always to help injured workers and athletes return to their activities with the highest level of function and quality of life.
Bloom Magazine: Dr. Ortega, thank you for sharing your insights with us today. Your dedication to advancing orthopedic care and helping patients recover is truly inspiring.
Dr. Ortega: Thank you, it's been a pleasure speaking with you and sharing a bit about my practice.
