In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of speaking with Kimberly Hunter, Medical Only Adjuster at Relation Insurance. With nearly two decades in the healthcare field, Kimberly has transitioned into the world of workers’ compensation, bringing her extensive experience and passion for helping others along with her.

"I am a healthcare veteran of going on 19 years," Kimberly shares, noting her background includes an AA degree in Nursing and a BS degree in healthcare management. "I have had the pleasure of working in and with almost every aspect of healthcare." Recently, she departed from sleep medicine to embrace her new role as a Medical Only Adjuster at Relation Insurance, diving headfirst into this industry. Her fascination with workers' compensation began long before she took the plunge into this new career path. "I have always been intrigued by the work comp industry and all of its moving parts," she explains. After working closely with Relation Insurance over the years, an opportunity arose that she couldn’t pass up. Now, just two months into her role, she has already earned her all-lines insurance adjuster license.

When asked what motivates her each day, Kimberly reflects on the importance of her work. "I am motivated by the ability I have to facilitate the care of our injured workers to get back to work better than ever," she says. "My team is absolutely amazing and has also been an instrumental part of my current position." A typical week for her starts with checking emails, managing tasks under tight deadlines, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure claimants receive the care they need.

One aspect of her job that brings her immense satisfaction is the closure of cases. "Closing files is my favorite thing,"Kimberly confides. "When I close a file, I know that my claimant is back to work and doing what they enjoy." This sense of accomplishment drives her commitment to her role.

Currently, Kimberly is also involved in broader initiatives, having recently joined the Culture Club to help with the upcoming STAW week for staff at Relation Insurance. "My approach to networking is being personable with people," she explains. "Being down to earth and understanding people is something I enjoy." Building professional yet genuine relationships is vital to her networking strategy. Kimberly looks up to Christina Rodriguez, her mentor at Relation, whose dedication and knowledge about workers’ compensation inspires her. "Her experience and dedication to her job is unmatched," Kimberly says. "To see her in action with her claimants, attorneys, and employers is extraordinary."

Navigating her role as a younger female leader, Kimberly has faced challenges, especially during her tenure as a billing manager. "The team was apprehensive when I came into my previous role," she recounts. Through candid communication and relationship-building, she eased the transition into a cohesive team dynamic. "I learned long ago that in order for me to be a great leader, I have to lead and not manage," she emphasizes. Her philosophy extends to the empowerment of women in the workplace. "My motto is, 'Empowered women empower women,'" she states. "Women have to stick together no matter the obstacles as we are all in this together and fighting for the same things."

Looking ahead, Kimberly aspires to become a Field Case Manager, a role that aligns with her long-standing desire to work within the workers' compensation industry. "I have always wanted to work in healthcare, and throughout my career, I have always wanted to work within the work comp industry," she says.

She believes that soft skills are crucial in her line of work, and appreciates the flexibility her hybrid job provides, allowing her to balance her professional and personal life. "This has allowed me to be more productive at home and at work," she notes.

Kimberly is also passionate about women’s rights, especially for the sake of her daughter and niece. "I have high hopes that they will know how truly amazing they both are to this world," she expresses. Outside of work, Kimberly enjoys eating, shopping, singing, and spending time with family, and she even tried out for American Idol at one point.

As she continues her journey in workers' compensation, Kimberly emphasizes the importance of clear communication, valuing feedback, and understanding the challenges faced by providers willing to take work comp patients. "From what I have been exposed to so far, I would say that we need to find out why most providers do not want to take work comp patients," she suggests.

Kimberly Hunter’s story is one of dedication, empowerment, and a commitment to helping others. As she navigates the complexities of the workers' compensation field, her journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for those who share her passion for making a difference.
